History
In early June 2010, the time had come: HOSI Wien moved from its basement venue in Novaragasse in the 2nd district, which it had operated for 30 years through voluntary self-management, to new premises in the vibrant scene around the Naschmarkt. After a provisional phase and extensive renovations, City Councilor Sandra Frauenberger personally attended the official opening of HOSI Wien's new community center on September 25, 2010, in the presence of many guests.
Countless hours of work, financial resources, and dedication were poured into the new space, and it truly shows. In addition to the bar area, restrooms, and kitchen, the Gugg features an office space and an event room, “Gios Room,” equipped with a lighting and sound system as well as a stage.
The association and community center was named after Franz Xaver Gugg (1921–2003), a pioneer of the homosexual movement and long-time supporter of HOSI Wien. Further information about his remarkable story can be found in LAMBDA 03/2002, starting on page 42.
Additional background story/stories about Franz Xaver Gugg and his legacy and heritage can be found in LAMBDA-Nachrichten #1/07, p. 6 ff, in issue 1/10, p. 12 ff, in issue #2/09, p. 30 ff, as well as in issue #5/07, p. 26 ff (portrait of Charlotte Steurer).
Gio's Room was named partly after James Baldwin’s novel Giovanni’s Room and partly after long-time HOSI Wien activist Giovanni Reichmann.
