Carl Værnet – Der dänische SS-Arzt im KZ Buchenwald
327 Pages, € 19.90
In an unprecedented perversion of medical practice, numerous pseudo-scientific experiments were conducted on prisoners in Nazi concentration camps, often with fatal outcomes. Among these were experiments on homosexual men, who were subjected to various coercive measures in an attempt to "cure" them of their homosexuality.
A leading figure in these experiments was the Danish doctor and SS-Sturmbannführer Carl Værnet (1893–1965). At Buchenwald, he implanted prisoners with an "artificial gland" he had developed, which was intended to continuously release male hormones into the body to "convert" them to heterosexuality.
