Following a statement by COURAGE, HOSI Vienna calls for responsible journalism and highlights the real dangers of distorted reporting.
HOSI Vienna refers to the current statement by COURAGE and warns about the consequences of inaccurate media coverage concerning counseling centers for trans people.
“Incomplete and distorted research poses real dangers to trans people,” emphasizes Ann-Sophie Otte, chairperson of HOSI Vienna. “There will always be individuals with criminal intent who try to exploit the state. In this case, the protective mechanisms worked, and appropriate measures were taken.”
Otte appeals to the media:
“Those who report without thorough research make themselves tools of political manipulation. Responsible journalism protects people and prevents hate campaigns.”
COURAGE Responds to Irresponsible Reporting by Kronen Zeitung and Other Media
Mag. Johannes Wahala, head of the COURAGE counseling centers, comments on the misleading reporting by Kronen Zeitung and other outlets.
“The association COURAGE has not issued any support for Walter, also known as Waltraud, for a change of legal gender or first name,” clarifies Mag. Johannes Wahala, head of COURAGE counseling centers. “Nor was there any referral to a psychiatrist. Our responsible approach is clearly demonstrated by our professional diagnostic procedures regarding transgender identity.”
Wahala stresses that the reports by Kronen Zeitung and other media are false and that no contact was made for research purposes. At COURAGE, all assessments are carried out by trans-competent experts according to clear professional guidelines.
“We only issue statements after scientifically sound diagnostics, several counseling sessions, and an internal case conference,” explains Wahala. “The initial session serves solely to provide information and an initial assessment. In the case of Walter, also known as Waltraud, the person did not return after the first meeting—therefore, no further support took place.”
“We act responsibly, we protect those affected, and we prevent abuse,” Wahala emphasizes. “Our approach is a functioning example of what professional psychosocial work in the LGBTIQ field should look like.”
